Mars will be at its closest point to earth tonight, and will not be this close again until 2016. Forecasts for viewing mars in the sky for much of the midwest and eastern North America tonight indicate clear skies. Check it out tonight … look to the east!

I will certainly be going out to take a look. Tonight and other nights until it gets smaller!

Scientists have discovered a warm and rocky “second Earth” circling a star, a find they believe dramatically boosts the prospects that we are not alone.

Off to the Moon -> Mars -> “Second Earth.” This is a truly amazing discovery, if the plan is to get to Mars by 2030 I am pretty sure we can do this by 2100 or sooner. We aren’t going to be going there at light speed seeing as it’s totally impossible. It would definately have to be done with a generational ship. Not an easy task… might as well practice with getting to the Moon and Mars first :P

Stellarium

September 27th, 2007

Last week Mike showed me a program called Stellarium. Stellarium lets you take a look at the sky for your desired location. All you really need are the latitude and longitude of your position. Once those are inputting it will show you what is in the sky. This is a perfect application for seeing what will be coming up in the next few hours. Especially with it’s ability to speed up time.

The video is small, so why not just go try out the program for yourself :P

Planetary Simulator

June 29th, 2007

OK. First off this isn’t flash but I just couldn’t resist. Basically if you’ve got an interest in the planets this will be fun for you. Basically what you do is you insert planets by using a “circle” on the menu. The planets will orbit around the sun and be affected by other planets. You can even add more suns! Lets just say you wouldn’t want me to create a binary planetary system :P

You can play it here. It’s also made with java.

What does Earth look like when viewed from Mars? At 13:00 GMT on 8 May 2003, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) had an opportunity to find out. In addition, a fortuitous alignment of Earth and Jupiter—the first planetary conjunction viewed from another planet—permitted the MOC to acquire an image of both of these bodies.

Now this is why you take a trip to Mars… whenever you can in the future.

A new Hubble image of the Antennae galaxies is the sharpest yet of this merging pair of galaxies. As the two galaxies smash together, billions of stars are born, mostly in groups and clusters of stars. The brightest and most compact of these are called super star clusters.

“What you saw today was a flawless count, a majestic launch,” said NASA Administrator Michael Griffin. “Not everything in the count leading up to this day was easy. We had to dodge tropical storms, lightning strikes and things like that.”
