Mars Closer To Earth Tonight Than Until 2016
December 18th, 2007
Mars will be at its closest point to earth tonight, and will not be this close again until 2016. Forecasts for viewing mars in the sky for much of the midwest and eastern North America tonight indicate clear skies. Check it out tonight … look to the east!
I will certainly be going out to take a look. Tonight and other nights until it gets smaller!

The Top 100 Tech Innovations of All Time!
December 4th, 2007
Here are the most exciting, amazing, and incredible PC advances of all time. From the venerable TRS-80 to the first programmable graphics cards, this is every single major tech advance for the last 20+ years!
I can agree with most of them on this list. However I do have some favourites:
Skype – Use this for the podcast.
Firefox – Open source browser that has become the best replacement for IE.
Core 2 Duo – The main CPU that still has a great amount of life in it. Outperforms most other consumer grade CPU’s.
Ubuntu – Made desktop linux viable for the average user.
Cable Modem – Moved everyone out of the dark ages of 56Kbps dial up.
Doom – Influential first person shooter game. Set the standards for more to come.
Windows XP – The OS that won’t die. I still use it and I don’t see myself moving to Vista.

Why Not Use a Base-10 System for Time?
November 5th, 2007
“Metric Time (MT) is an attempt to create a decimalized time system for our modern base-10 using world. This is a neglected part of the Metric System (or SI) which has created a whole measuring system based on 10 for mass, distance, volume, etc., but no official decimalized time units for normal day-to-day use.”
Personally I think this is definately needed. It’s quite funny… I was talking to Mike last night about this after the daylight savings change and he had suggested the idea of Metric Time. Definately a good read.
Although we could adopt a stardate type format

“Second Earth” found–20 lightyears away!
October 17th, 2007
Scientists have discovered a warm and rocky “second Earth” circling a star, a find they believe dramatically boosts the prospects that we are not alone.
Off to the Moon -> Mars -> “Second Earth.” This is a truly amazing discovery, if the plan is to get to Mars by 2030 I am pretty sure we can do this by 2100 or sooner. We aren’t going to be going there at light speed seeing as it’s totally impossible. It would definately have to be done with a generational ship. Not an easy task… might as well practice with getting to the Moon and Mars first

What Does Earth And Juipter Look Like When Viewed From Mars?
June 27th, 2007
What does Earth look like when viewed from Mars? At 13:00 GMT on 8 May 2003, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) had an opportunity to find out. In addition, a fortuitous alignment of Earth and Jupiter—the first planetary conjunction viewed from another planet—permitted the MOC to acquire an image of both of these bodies.
Now this is why you take a trip to Mars… whenever you can in the future.

How Killing People With My Dad Improved Our Relationship
June 16th, 2007
We have all seen, heard, and read no end of press that focuses on the negative aspects of video games. Personally I’m a little tired of it, especially when my own experience has been exactly the opposite. If anything, killing people online with my dad has improved our relationship.
Definately a worthwhile read, it just goes to show it’s never too late to learn how to game

Microsoft Now Decides to Accept Outside Security for Vista
October 15th, 2006
Microsoft did an about-face yesterday, agreeing to make it easier for customers of its forthcoming Vista operating system to use outside security vendors, such as those who make popular antivirus and anti-spyware programs.
Until now, Microsoft had planned to block those companies from installing their products in the deepest levels of the new OS.
This needs to be done as some products do a better job than Microsoft itself.
